  Glossary

  Anchor:

  An arrangement of one or (usually) more pieces of gear set up to support the weight of a belay or top rope

  Belay:

  To protect a roped climber from falling by passing the rope through, or around, any type of friction enhancing belay device. Before belay devices were invented, the rope was simply passed around the belayer's hips to create friction.

  Barn-door

  If a climber has only two points of contact using either the right or left side of their body, the other half may swing uncontrollably out from the wall like a door on a hinge.

  Chauffeur:

  A person employed to drive a private vehicle or limousine for the owner.

  Covert:

  Secret or concealed.

  Curmudgeonly:

  Bad-tempered, difficult, or cantankerous

  Dan:

  A black belt degree of expertise in martial arts, e.g. A 2nd dan is the next level after 1st dan black belt in taekwondo.

  Discombobulating:

  Confusing or upsetting.

  Flagging:

  Climbing technique where a leg is held in a position to maintain balance, rather than to support weight.

  Gullible:

  Easily deceived or cheated.

  Incognito:

  In disguise

  Lollapalooza:

  An extraordinary, exceptional or unusual thing, person, example or event.

  Minted:

  To make coins by stamping metal

  Nac Nac:

  A freestyle trick in which the rider brings one leg over the seat and then puts his foot back on the peg for the landing.

  Omnium-gatherum:

  A miscellaneous collection.

  Rappel (or Abseil):

  The process by which a climber can descend a fixed rope.

  Schnook:

  An unimportant or stupid person, a dope.

  Superman:

  A freestyle trick where the rider keeps his hands on the grips and straightens his body and legs above and parallel to the bike.

  Whip:

  Freestyle trick in which rider lays the bike flat horizontally in the air and then brings it back up for the landing.
